The Clinical Excellence Division welcomes Dr John Reilly to the role of Chief Psychiatrist.

Dr Reilly joins us from the Townsville Hospital and Health Service where he was the Medical Director of Mental Health. He has worked as a general adult psychiatrist since 1992 in a wide variety of clinical settings in Victoria and Queensland.  He has had particular clinical interest in substance use disorders and their comorbidity with other mental health disorders, early psychosis, borderline personality disorder and rural and remote mental health service delivery. His clinical governance focus has included care review, critical incident management, clinical documentation and handover. John also chairs the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Education Committee’s Subcommittee for Advanced Training in Addictions and the Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry’s Queensland Branch Committee.

The role of the Chief Psychiatrist is to provide specialist advice regarding the clinical care of people with mental illness and/or substance misuse problems. Dr Reilly is also appointed as Chief Psychiatrist under the Mental Health Act 2016 and is responsible for the administration of the Act.

The Office of the Chief Psychiatrist’s overall aim is to improve the outcomes and recovery for consumers of mental health services and clients of alcohol and other drug services through leadership, advice and direction. Through clinical governance support and quality and safety initiatives the team help our public mental health services to deliver high quality care to some of the state’s most vulnerable people.

Executive Director Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch Associate Professor John Allan welcomed Dr Reilly to the team. “Dr Reilly is a highly dedicated and respected clinician and senior manager focused on clinical care and the treatment of people with mental illness or drug and alcohol problems.”

Congratulations Dr Reilly and welcome aboard!
