Improving kidney patient outcomes and kidney services in Central Queensland was the focus of a recent visit to Rockhampton Hospital by members of the Advancing Kidney Care 2026 (AKC2026) Project Delivery Team.
Rockhampton was the first site of 17 to be visited by the team. Approximately 20 Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service staff were in attendance to learn how the activities of AKC2026 will support them to improve kidney patient outcomes. Clinical Lead Professor Kesh Baboolal said the sessions also sought to engage the support of kidney services to contribute to a statewide mapping and gap analysis of specialist kidney care provision.
‘So while we are sharing information about the project and where we are going, it’s really an opportunity for us to hear from kidney services about how they deliver care, their achievements and their challenges,’ he said.
Prof Baboolal said the ‘roadshow’ would also visit hospitals in Bundaberg, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Mt Isa, Cairns, Gold Coast, Townsville, Mackay, Logan, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast, as well as videoconference sessions with the Central West and South West Hospital and Health Services.
The sessions will provide an update on:
- The Queensland Health framework for delivering quality care to patients with kidney disease (the Framework), which was endorsed in August 2019
- The development of a statewide kidney care data source
- The development of an alternative kidney care funding model.
The sessions will also introduce the planned work to undertake a statewide mapping and gap analysis of how kidney services are currently delivered to compare against the care described in the Framework and identify where there are any gaps, and development recommendations to begin to bridge these gaps.
Advancing Kidney Care 2026 officially commenced in September 2018 with the establishment of the AKC2026 Collaborative, following a statewide review of kidney services. For more information on the project visit the website.
