Inpatient care

The RACF acute care support service (RaSS) and the Geriatric Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI) aim to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions where possible. However, when inpatient care is needed, we want to ensure our frail older patients are kept moving and engaged to help prevent physical and cognitive decline during their stay. We are scaling our inpatient initiatives to expand the Eat Walk Engage model of care into more hospitals.

Eat Walk Engage

Eat Walk Engage (EWE) is a multi-disciplinary program to improve care and outcomes for older inpatients, helping to prevent delirium and promote functional recovery. It also helps hospitals to be more older-person friendly regarding care, engagement and environmental design.

The program improves staff skills and knowledge in care of older people, improves care processes (mobility, mealtime care, and cognitive engagement), and can reduce length of stay and increase discharges home.
