The theme for The Great Debate at Showcase 2019 was – as they’ve come to be known as – a bit controversial, with debaters discussing whether clinicians or bureaucrats were running the healthcare system.

Some of the sharpest minds in Queensland went head to head, trading verbal blows. Team clinicians included Associate Professor Robyn Littlewood – Director Health Services Research, Children’s Health Queensland, Dr Cade Grima – Director Emergency and Clinical Director Digital Hospital, West Moreton Health, and Dr Carl de Wet – GP Liaison Officer, GPwSI – Gold Coast Health and Clinical Excellence Queensland.

Team bureaucrats included Dr Lynne McKinlay – Medical Director Learning and Workforce, Children’s Health Queensland Dr Clair Sullivan – Chief Digital Health Officer, Metro North Hospital and Health Service Professor Keith McNeil – Assistant DDG and Chief Clinical Information Officer, Clinical Excellence Queensland.

As always, the audience gets to decide who wins. Despite the social wall on the Event App blowing up with lots of comments and support for clinicians, the vote came to a dead tie with exactly 50 per cent of the votes each. But, on the upside it showed how everyone plays an equally important role in running the healthcare system.
