With one 46-bed hospital providing tertiary support to 12 other remote communities, the Mount Isa Hospital routinely faces bed pressures. But thanks to the Hospital in the Home model, the North West is relieving bed block by taking stable patients and conditions and managing these in the community. By establishing a medical hostel for Indigenous patients who do not reside in Mount Isa, patients are out of hospital but still receiving care. Consumers now have more options for their care, particularly the discharged against medical advice or DAMA patients, who may deteriorate in the community and need to return to hospital.
