The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we deliver care. Many great initiatives have enabled Queensland clinicians to continue to care for patients without them needing to leave their homes or their communities, presenting a number of advantages along with some challenges. The delivery of certain types of healthcare has been reconsidered.
The Senate’s first fully virtual meeting gave us the chance to reflect on and crystallise the learnings from the innovations and transformations, such as the virtual hospital, that have enabled care to continue while we prepare for and respond to COVID-19. It was also an opportunity to engage diverse participant perspectives from clinicians, consumers and health system managers and executives.
The meeting considered:
- What models of care worked and why – what have we learnt
- What barriers were overcome to enable new models of care to be introduced in a short timeframe
- What are the barriers to enabling successful models of care to continue
- What priorities and recommendations should inform decision making for the “new normal” of the health system
